About the sheep:

Leicester Longwool sheep date back to the 1700s, and were found in the Midland counties of EnglandIt is now one of the rarest sheep breeds.

In the US, Leicester Longwool has great historic and genetic value, playing a role in the founding or improving of many other sheep breeds, including Border Leicester and Corriedale. Did you know that the Leicester Longwool was re-introduced to the US in 1990 thanks to the work of Colonial Williamsburg?
The Leicester Longwool fleece is dense and lustrous with a well-defined crimp. The common fiber diameter for Leicester Longwool is 32 to 38 microns. This yarn is perfect for hardwearing garments and for textured projects.

Because each of these hand-dyed skeins is unique, we recommend alternating skeins as you knit or crochet if your project requires 2 or more skeins.

* The Livestock Conservancy believes that the way to save endangered breeds of livestock is to give them jobs. In the case of wool sheep, we need to start using their wool again. Because of marketing challenges, some shepherds discard or compost the wool after their annual shearing, rather than cleaning it and selling it. The SE2SE program encourages fiber artists to try using rare wools, and helps shepherds learn how to prepare their wool for sale and how to reach potential customers, thereby making it more profitable to raise heritage breeds.(https://livestockconservancy.org/get-involved/shave-em-to-save-em/)

The Livestock Conservancy is America’s leading organization working to save over 150 heritage breeds from extinction. They rely on the support of members, grants, and donations from the public to raise the $700,000 a year needed to maintain their conservation work with rare breeds of farm animals.
